Re: Got any Blurb Promo Codes?

I've been wanting to put some of my photos collected into a few books, just for myself mainly. I think I'll give blurb a try. Frank, you said that the blacks get a little crushed? Do they offer any test prints? Would you suggest lifting the blacks just a tad before sending?

If they don't offer any test prints, I may just do one book with the minimum number of pages, and put in photos that cover a large slice of contrasts, some lower-key images, some higher-key images, some with heavy contrast and some with very light contrast, just to get a feel for it. And maybe even a few "test strip" type photos, with different contrast levels in strips, to see what looks best.

No I'd keep blacks black, I'd open up the midtones 10% but have a solid black and a solid white.

Thanks! :-) Were you letting your blacks hit 0 and your whites hit 255? or were you backing off one or two values, 1 and 254 or something?

How much you wanna bet one point won't matter? ;-)

I think you can let it be 0-255, it's a digital press and it's hard paper so I don't think things swell up and spread out as much as conventional printing. And if you put the blacks too light you'll just get a dirty grey.

You can do a test book of course ;-)

just curious, I know sometimes in some types of printing if white hits 255 it'll get a different type of shine on it, so hot highlights look odd. :-)

Might be why I put black borders around my pictures ;-)

Yes you have to watch the blank whites, it depends how they fall. I have some pictures with almost white skies that I did some work to in order to keep a tone. Transitions are the trickiest part... But sometimes you can let it ride, depends on the image.

I'll have to put some different versions of highlights in my test book then as well :-)

Anyone have any working promo codes for this month?

Everything prior seems to be kaputt!
