    Re: What is a"vision"?

    Here's a suggestion:

Take a bunch of your prints to a big area where you can lay them out. Do so.

Look at them, and start to move them around. Watch how they almost arrange themselves according only to how you feel about them. No other criteria.

At some point declare victory, stand back, and look at them. What do you see? What do the groups of pictures tell you about yourself? What you find interesting to photograph?

Want to make it tougher? If you have a group of ten, create a sequence that uses only 6. Eliminate 4. Make it a conscious sequence that has a beginning, middle, and end, using how you feel about each picture. Strongest pictures at each end.

Go back to your groups. Which groups interest you the most? Which do you want to make more of? Set priorities between groups that interest you.

Define a project for each good group with a specific product, timeframe, and deadlines. I suggest no more than 3.

Go forth and produce photographs to complete the projects. My suggestion: Hang a show, even if it is your own house. A show is a wonderful motivator.

Does each group constitute a part of a vision? I don't know. I don't really care. I try to enjoy doing the projects.

Good photograping to you. Hope this helps. Ruminating over having a vision can be paralyzing - so go forth into the world with your camera!

My visions often morph from previous projects. Lately have been making videos. It all started with the first video Girls of Instagram and all the rest were offshoots.

In my modest experience most of those who claim to have a 'vision' are deluded. They like to present themselves in text which is, of course not vision. Our work should represent intentions by visual presentation.

Some topics only make sense to those in tune to the same thought process. To many, it is a good picture, or a not so good picture. The why is irrelevant.
