I subscribe to Popular Photography ... the current issue contains their annual "Readers Photo Contest" winners.

I had to laugh when I read the comment by the grand prize winner explaining how he got the gorgeous effect shooting with his Canon EOS-1D: "Everything seemed to come together. I made three vertical images and then stitched them together, for a quality similar to that of a 4x5 camera."

Jim, at least he was honest and used the word "similar"; for that he should be commended!

Definition of similar: having a resemblance.

Did you see the second one? The seagulls and the lighthouse? Your Cup of Tea may vary, but that assuredly wasn't mine.

I ran into that photographer two years ago near aspendell, ca. He's got chrome license plate holder with frates photography on it if I remember correctly. That image just doesn't look right to me. All my 4x5 shots have qualities similar to that of a canon eos mark whatthefuckever -1D!

As for the second one, they oughta track down anyone who shoots lighthouses and torture them.

I guess "Avatar" will be the biggest influence for emerging photographers these days. The "masters" will be teams of Cray-equipped drones at CGI studios.

But shooting boat docks at sunset is just fine? Now there's an unexplored subject.

I don't know... it seems to me that the bar has been lowered so much and that people actually believe this stuff. The way I see it... a high-end DSLR can only come close to, say an 8x10 contact print, if you stitch 54 1x1.5" (or whatever the ratio is) native resolution images together.

I was pleasantly surprised to see a few people shooting film in that contest. (Let's look at things from the bright side - and let's forget the rest…)
