    Photographs of Avedon

We recently digitized a number of images from Lambshead Ranch which is owned by Watt Mathews. Mathews was the guy who gave Avedon the cowboy hat he wore while out photographing his In the American West series.

There are 7 photographs of Avedon at Lambshead including a couple with Laura Wilson (she may have been the photographer of some) and a very fun photo postcard of Avedon and Laura Wilson they sent to Matthews.

I can't get the server to respond-I got the first image up--took a while--and have been waiting five minutes for #2.

And chance you could post them here?

Shoot, of course I put this up and we have issues. We're trouble-shooting them, but I have the same problem as you--if I can't pull them up I can't post them here!

I did dump the direct links here:

It's interesting ... why would the photographer of these images NOT be known? Surely if Laura Wilson shot them she would be in possession of them wouldn't she?

it could be that the source is a pile of prints with no attribution notes on the backs?- OP sez "...from the ranch....."

We don't know because the only information we have on them is from Matthews Land & Cattle Company and they didn't have that information (beyond who it could have been).

And while we do research to find more information on an image for metadata creation there are limits to what we can do with our resources. Emailing photographers (especially those as busy as I imagine Laura Wilson to be) who might, possibly, be the photographer is really beyond the scope of what we can do--BUT if you would like to track this down and submit a comment it would be greatly appreciated!

I emailed Laura Wilson and included a link to this forum. Who knows, maybe she'll contact me or better yet, let us know on this forum who shot what, where, and when. It would be interesting to know. Hope this helps.

I don't know if anyone cares but the reason for the funky service earlier today was caused by a massive rsync on the same set of switches that this system shares. Once the rsync finished up what it was doing the system went back to the normal quick response time. It was an interesting problem solving exercise to figure out what exactly was going on that was causing the slowdown. Anyway just thought I would share because wow, how embarrassing...
