Both images taken with a Chamonix 045F1 and a Fujinon W 180mm lens. Scanned on my Howtek 4500.

I really like the tonality and texture of this image, especially of the fern in relation to the oak leaves and shadows of the background.

Mimosa? Very nice--I'm impressed how light a tone the greens left you with. A question: assuming the bracken is angled 20-degrees, can assume that you tilted both front and rear standard forward by that much?

    Re: Just Leaves

    Thank you both.

My backyard is a big hill that slopes down to a creek that only runs after rain. It rained a few days ago and so it was flowing nicely, and these big beds of ferns had grown up around the creek area (I think it is a fiddle-head, just fully outstretched). I struggled for a bit to compose an image of the ferns, but ended up finding a nice one without any damage or chewed-up leaves and set it on the ground straddling that piece of wood. The camera was aimed straight down, no movements, and set to f/32. The background leaves are still clearly out of focus even at that aperture, with the large magnification. A bit of dodging of the fern and burning of the background leaves was done to get the fern to be a bit more luminous (probably could've done an N+2 development, but this works fine).

Will probably make a contact print of this. Perhaps on ART 300 textured paper.

Excellent, I imagine that took a pretty steady hand. (FWIW, it's still a learning process for me to learn how greens/grays will sift out in black-and-white...I have played around with both green and orange filters, but sometimes "gray mush" is the order of the day.)

Yeah I think our particular mix of overwhelmingly green foliage and midtone soil can be difficult to handle. Another shot I took yesterday was indeed "grey mush." A partly-cloudy day with directional but diffuse lighting when the clouds obscure the sun is a great solution to that, if you are lucky enough to get those conditions. Directional, dappled light is another equally difficult condition for other reasons.
