A shutter for the Working Man ...

    Hi Everyone,
I just semi-finished my Cambo / Packard shutter for barrel lens rig & wanted to share.

    I have 3 nice barrel lens with a shutter that does 1/20th & 1/8 ... and "B".

    Here's how I did it.

    1) a lens board (for your camera brand)
    2) a frame from a standard (for your camera brand)
    3) a Packard shutter as big as your lens board
    4) screws, spacers, drill press, beer

I took the frame off a $18.00 evilBay standard and a Packard shutter from the same place. Mine is a #6... rare & cool because it was a bulb for "B" and a separate bulb for instant ... $100. I bet I paid too much, but didn't want to wait and shop around.

The rest is easy... Machine out the inside of the lens board , next place small spacer, making fit into camera frame easier. Now the Shutter, hole close to lensboard, now spacer big enough for the piston to travel under (1/2" or so) and tap the frame (#6 tap size) from the standard you got from you-know-where, screw the whole thing together with #6 screws. Oh, you will need to counter sink the "V" shaped screw heads.

So it fits like a Sinar shutter, in-between the bellows & front standard. That's it.

Yes I know the sides are open, if not you would not be able to see in.

    So I get "B", 1/8, 1/20 ... then with the "Steve Karr Slit shutter" (Card Stock, black velvet & a Slit) 1/30, 1/60, 1/120, and 250'ish.

    Sweet!

    Here are the pics....

I haven't tested the flash sync yet. I bet it'll work.

Did you get a 3 inch or 3 1/2 inch opening out of that?

    Hi Bill,
This shutter is the one with 3 1/2 opening.

Re: A shutter for the Working Man ...

I did a similar thing with a an ilex packard between the a Kodak 2D and a Cambo mount.
My only problem was the vignetting of lenses whose back element was close to or larger than the size of the shutter hole, Particularily at large apertures. Because of this, movements were curtailled as well. I see the lens you have on is smaller than the shutter hole and will work well I am sure. I really start to have problems with a 14 inch f4.5 or larger.
Please let us know how you get on with this in practical situations
    Regards
    Bill

I made something similar, following Bob Fowler's instructions HERE.

I also added a flash sync - which works

It takes Speed Graphic lesboards - but the front adapter can be changed, so I'm not limited exclusively to Speed Graphic lenses/lensboards.

    Hi Bill,
I also have a 11.5" Verito. She's much bigger than the Voigthlander. But with a 3 1/2" hole in this shutter, you could push a goose thru there !

I don't ever shoot landscapes or even close to infinity so no worries.

    Now for some 12 stop ND's ......

    See yea!

I have decided to have my machinist make me a 5" shutter for the working Man. We are going to add a cake pan (stainless steel dish) in between to achieve light tightness and to mount the 8.5 in shutter inside. Thanks for the inspiration, Steve
