Coverage of various Schneider 47mm lenses

    Hello,

I'm shopping for/fantasizing about the 47 mm Super Angulon. Apparently Schneide r once made an f5.6 non-XL and also an f8 version of this lens. Various vendors seem to have different opinions of the respective coverages of the lenses, and Schneider's website only discusses the new XL lens. While I would like to cover 4x5 I would be willing to go with 6x12 if it would save me 800$, which it most certainly would if I get the f8 lens.

A recent post, which I have been frustratingly unable to find, stated that one o f these lenses covered 6x12, but I don't know which lens the poster was speaking of. I suspect the f8 may only cover 6x9. (Or 6x7?)

Does anyone have actual experience with these lenses, and know for certain the c overage of the f8 and non-XL 47s?

My brief experience with the 47 f8 showed that it required f22 for satisfactory corners for 6x9.

In my experience the only 47mm Super Angulon that will cover 4x5 is the newest X L version. I recently shot with a non XL f/5.6 lens and all four corners were de eply cut off (about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch from corner of film to edge of image c icle, measured on a diagonal towards the center of the film). Also you will need the center weighted filter for even exposure with either the XL or non-xl versi on of the lens. The non-XL should work for 6x12 but you won't have much movement . Have you thought about the 55mm (or even 45mm) APO-Grandagons?

The non-XL, also f/5.6 is even smaller...92 deg angle of view, 98mm image circle diameter at full aperture, and a 105mm angle of view. Recommended format size is 60x60.

Ellis, the published image circle at f/22 for the 47XL is 166mm, and that seems about right: in my use of this lens on a Cambo wide body with 4x5 holders (which measured at 151mm diagonal), I've had no problem with vignetting even with a 15 mm shift until I'm down to about f13.5.... hth

Simon, thanks for the image circle info on the 47mm XL, I knew from experience t hat the 110mm image circle quoted by Peter was too small. How do you like the Cambowide?

From experience, the regular f/8 47mm SA (the cheap one) will only cover 6x10 (altho it will do 4x12 for panoramics). I got it to use on my 2x3 Graphics, but sometimes use it for 4x12 on a Supergraphics.

The Super Angulon published image circle of 110mm is at full aperture of f/5.6, at f/22 it is 166mm. This is according to the Schneider Kreuznach flyer I received from Schnieder.

    ciao
