I took this on my Intrepid 8x10 (not the best camera, but the Chamonix 8x10 is a bit pricey for me right now) with a 250mm Fujinon W.

Nice shot. I'm curious about the comparison. As long as the film is flat, and you're using the same lens, why would a Chamonix be better than an Intrepid?

The repetition of horizontal elements creates a calm image. Excellent!

Alan, thank you for the compliment! Regarding my comment on Intrepid vs. Chamonix:

Unfortunately, I have disliked my Intrepid 8x10 since the day I got it for several reasons:

    • It is very difficult to get a film holder slid in place. Frequently, the act of inserting the film holder causes the rear standard of the camera to tilt forward or backward. I made some minor modifications that have helped somewhat, but it is still not very good.
    • It it quite flimsy. No matter how hard I tighten down the rear standard, it never stays in place very well.
    • The first several photographs I took using the camera showed light leaks. The bellows were not secured to the rear standard well enough and I had glue it in myself.
    • I have good eyesight, and I feel that the ground glass is just dreadful. I can hardly see anything on it.

I also started with an Intrepid 4x5 and, during a trip last year, the front standard broke and my lens fell to the ground, causing a deep scratch on the front glass. I had similar complaints about the flimsiness of the 4x5. I bought a Chamonix 45F-2 and was blown away by how much better it was. Virtually every complaint I had about the Intrepid was solved by the Chamonix. I feel that the Chamonix 8x10, whenever I decide to purchase one, will similarly solve my complaints with the Intrepid 8x10.

The sad thing is, the quality of my Intrepid 8x10 keeps me from shooting more 8x10.

Agreed. It's always nice to enjoy a successful photograph that violates one of the "rules of composition" (viz., "Don't break up the picture with horizontal lines").
    Where are we going?
And why are we in this handbasket?

I agree - I am very disappointed in my Intrepid 4X5, but I guess it is what it is

You definitely get what you pay for. For me, the Intrepid 4x5 was a great educational tool. I took some good photos with it and got into large format using it. But once I used a higher quality camera, its deficiencies really came to light.
