Jeesh...I'm kind of embarrassed to show this here - but I figured I'd better double-post it so anyone who'd read my "Up off the Mat" thread in the business section could follow up. At any rate...I'd referred to finally getting back into the darkroom to print - and was initially very excited by the negative belonging to the print below. My initial response to this print was "this is garbage!" - but then I started to like it. Still, I think there's way too much going on, and the top area is just a tad dark and too contrasty (I think). Right now I'm working up the gumption to print it again, and will post results. Here's the "garbage" version: (maybe will seem a bit less "garbage-y" over time, but not likely)

    John,

I like the busyness in this print.

I see what you mean about tonalities... If it were me, If I couldn't easily dodge up the areas that were too dark, I'd have my bleaching brush out and working , lightening where needed. Otherwise, I think this is a fine work.

I like all of the complexities in the ice, especially on the bottom left.

Really I just wanted to see if I could do a vertical with this camera. I need to try this again on a better day. It started to snow after shooting this and I left. It's hard to get good light here in this valley - only part of the year does it ever have sun shining into it and only part of the day. I have an idea for a shot in spring, if it works out, with this vertical setup near where I was shooting.

I own the gear, but those don't make masterpieces. My everyday experience.

The heavy top (dark and contrasty as you mentioned) does lean forward some -- reducing the feeling of depth in the image. A different printing might resolve this if that is the direction you want to go. If you divide the image in half, you almost have two different images --bringing those two together somehow in the printing might be challenging. Print size might become a factor, also. A larger print might allow the viewer to more easily enter a complex image. It is difficult judging by the a screen image. Have some fun with it!
