Those are hemlock trees, are they not? Around here most of the hemlocks are under attack from the wooly adelgid (Adelges tsuga) and are in decline, which
is a great shame.

Yes they are hemlocks Joe, and some White pine trunks behind. So far the hemlocks in this area (northwest corner of MA) seem okay, but it may just be a matter of time.
