    Re: Large Format Landscapes

A couple of favourites from last year's summer holiday.

Arran views, Isle of Bute, Scotland

    Pink Dusk
    8:27pm, 19th August 2018

    Linhof Technikardan S45
    Schneider Apo-Symmar MC 150mm f/5.6
    Fujichrome Velvia 50 5x4
    1½" f/32
12º front tilt, 1mm front fall
    Lee 0.45 Hard GND

    Blue Dusk
    8.44pm, 19th August 2018

    camera/lens/movements/filter as before
    8" f/32

Both self-developed with Jobo CPE-3 and Tetenal E6 (FD 7'10"), first
scanned with Silverfast Ai Studio 8, second with Nikon D800E on Lightbox (see update below). Second image could be processed darker to reflect failing light, but I like it as is. Two of my favourite images from 2018.

Very nice Dave. What are these scanned with? Epson flatbed? Drum?

    Thanks!
    Interesting question:

    The Pink one was scanned with Epson V850/Silverfast AiStudio8;

The second Blue one was done before I got the scanner in October, so was "scanned" with a four-frame stitch using Nikon D800E/85mm tilt-shift looking down on a Lightbox and aligned using Arca Cube/Novoflex focusing rack on my tripod.
In fact, I used 2 sets of 4-frame composites luminosity-merged to control dynamic range of slide on light box - a long-winded process... I have a note to scan it but have forgotten to do so. I'll plan to do that soon to compare results.

That's really interesting, thanks for the details.
I'm having a hard time scanning color negatives, especially when tones are subtle in the sky with Portra, but also when the dynamic range is very wide in Ektar. I've been dry scanning with a V800 so far but I'll test wet mounting soon, although I am curious to try a macro stitch using my Fujifilm XT2.
I'm curious to see your results. Keep us updated.

    Thanks,
    M.

    Thanks guys!

Have just scanned the slide; a reminder that to get the image to look right took quite a bit of work in photoshop. The previous versions posted look a bit oversharpened but are fine as originals.
Here's the new version: pretty similar, but a bit less time-consuming. The way I digitised with the Nikon pulled out more shadow detail in the rocks but I don't think the extra detail matters too much since the image is simplified a little without it.

That looks visibly more blue in the mountains, is it intended?
What's your scanning technique with color negatives instead?

Thing probably as intended, though I did add some saturation and work on targeted colour corrections in Silverfast to get it to start to work. For colour negs I now tend to use the NegaFix feature in Silverfast. Works pretty well inc with Ektar though a bit of work in curves with colour is still needed in photoshop to all the casts out. But don't expose much colour neg so haven't had that much experience.
