Yes, looks great. And a good choice of timber for the frame. I have a small stock of Huon Pine I bought for camera making. If it's good enough for boats and furniture, it'll do for cameras too... or at least that was my reasoning. I'm trying it out on a 5x7, will post the results.

Dark or black seems to be preferred for framing B&W prints. But I have a few frames I've made from the sap wood of blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) which work very well.

Barry a huon pine camera would be absolutely amazing. I would pay money just to see that thing! I have a real deep personal love for huon pine as my grandmothers house was made and furnished with it so it brings back some great memories. Nothing like the smell of it. It''s other-worldly

The profile of the frame in my picture is 811, I'm thinking of something of a thinner profile maybe 810 just so it's not so heavy around the edges.

I almost went for blackwood but the opportunity to use sacred huon pine made by myself to frame my handmade ambrotype photos was too hard of an opportunity to pass up. It's all very special to me
I digress I should save this for a other thread on topic

Please keep me updated on the camera.. I may even ask to commission one of you're up for it. I asked my uncle about making me a huon pine camera and he said it wouldnt be worth the cost of the timber

Can you use Black Heart Sassafras? Love the look of that stuff!

I know that it’s sourced in Tassie. I just don’t know its availability, its use for frames, nor its structural qualities for cameras.

I should finish my 7x17 build one day. I’m using Aussie Chestnut for that one. Very hard, both on the toughness scale and on the tools!

my boss did actually give me a few pieces of black heart sassafras to play with but the profile was a little heavy for what I want. I could perhaps order some but it is expensive and hard to get stuff with the nice black grain as all the premium stuff is reserved for bigger stuff like furniture and cabinet making.

get back on that 7x17, man... it's been ages!
