Re: safe haven for tiny formats

We're out in the middle of the lake in the canoe, sun gone over the mountains about 30 minutes ago, and I tell my wife to stop paddling every few minutes while I take photos. I'm She's probably thinking we'll be out in the real dark soon with bats and such. Oldest daughter took the kayak instead.

For a few minutes while the clouds were orange, the water looked like the cover of Porter's "In Wildness..." book but without the fall leaves and I couldn't get a nice photo of it. Then the sky cooled off and the water colors likewise.

I'm a fan of the water shapes from the paddles, partly because it's exciting to see, and I photograph it partly inspired by John Paul Caponigro's Resonance series.

HI took this a few nights ago after a concert at the Paramount Theater in Peekskill, NY.

The image is a composite of six bracketed shots taken at varying exposures and fused together to expand the dynamic range.

The lighting, despite the expanded range, required a fair amount of adjustment for pleasant balance.

The color temperature of the sodium vapor streetlights was a problem in particular. The orange-yellow of the streetlights cast an overpowering tint thru-out the image. This required a large amount of selective desaturation. I'm still not sure I took enough out.

There are at least 4 different types of lighting which add interest to the image - tungsten, metal halide, fluorescent, and sodium vapor.

I'd be interested to know how others have dealt with the color cast of SV streetlights.

This also comes across well as a B&W image.

D800E - ISO 100 - f9 - multiple exposures at varying shutter speeds combined with
HDR software for optimum dynamic range.
I know just enough to be dangerous !

    Thanks Peter.
My first photos taken were of a cloud like this one, off to the east at sunset. But this one has far more interesting tidbits. I would say that I have come full circle but I have a very large library of such images suggesting I never moved.

This storm was near Chula Georgia on August 13th, a few days later than the Enigma storm. Taken with a D800E and experimenting with this subject matter in B&W. Comments are welcome.

I like those results a lot. I've used both the Jobo press kit and that Unicolor. I think they are one-in-the-same. But I dunno. I can't adjust the purple out of the blacks during scan to save my life with Portra 400 and my 9000ED. I'd really like to shoot more color on film but that kind of holds me back.
