So, what do you think of the Qualls monobath? It's impossible to see grain characteristics on-screen. Do you get any mottling or unevenness in areas of even tone such as skies? How's the tonal range?

    Peter,
The tonal range is remarkably good for a method of development that allows no variations, and grain is much reduced compared to the same films developed in HC-110 or Rodinal. Mottling etc? - that's another story! I cannot make this work in a conventional tank. Only continuous rotation in a Rondinax works reliably, and the example above was done in a homemade motorised Rondinax. But outside the propensity to obvious surge marks, using this stuff in the Rondinax is actually well worthwhile. I started out making up the solution as a one-shot bath, but after investigating both pH and specific gravity, I felt confident enough to make up a litre for repeated use. I'm now at film #6 (I expect it to be good for ten) and I can see it changing as I go along. Less contrast than at first, but less tendency to unevenness too.

In short, I can't imagine why a curious person wouldn't want to explore this!

    Marty McKimmey,

    Wonderful shot.

I was there some years ago and made an image with almost same background.
I'm trying to recall the name of the dunes... Mesquite ?

    Hetocy,

    Beautiful portrait !
