"Thanks for the positive comments! I'll credit practice/perseverance for knowing when to use this SF lens. I'd like to do more 8x10 SF, but it's nowhere near as convenient as shooting 4x5."
That's one reason I use paper negatives to make early assesments of these lenses at various apertures.
A quick shot on paper, a quick dunk in Dektol, a quick scan (inverted), and I'll get a feel for how a lens acts at a given aperture.
Cheap, quick, informative, and educational.

Model A. My speed graphic I used here is very close in vintage. Lotsa shutter speed choices on the old pre-anniversaries. tmy2 4x5 film in pyrocat hd. Reinhold Wollaston 190mm.

and a huge difference in smoothness at f8. I might like something in between; I'll have to make my own waterhouse stops for perhaps two intermediate apertures.

And back at 5.6
Another f5.6 and f8 comparison. Same lens, same camera, film.. More model A's.

Thinking these may make decent toned cyanotypes sometime.
WOW!!! The way to my heart is through Model A's. Gorgeous pictures. 'Course, how could you make a Model A Ford look bad?? Like a beautiful woman. :~'))

Which intermediate stops would you like?
I have punches for 26, 29, 30 (calculates to f: 6.3), 31, and 32mm diameter.
I'll send a couple gratis.

Awesome, I appreciate that and will take you up on that!
30mm/f6.3 would be tops on my list followed by 29 and 31.
f8 is good for textured things (but might not be quite soft enough) like the motorcycle pannier bag and mug, or making a matte surface from a glossy surface such as chrome.
f5.6 is good for big shapes without much texture, like the model A images today, masses of light and dark.
I'm thinking intermediate aperture would be good to make the big shape stuff a little less soft so it can be enlarged and have that 5.6 look. Might be nice and dreamy without getting too crazy for people portraits as well, like a Kodak portrait 305 wide open, just guessing.
