    Re: Self Portraits

These are two versions of the same self-portrait I did in my MFA work. One is the standard photo, and the second is a version where I manipulated the photo. The basic idea about my thesis work was about my experiences in nature, and how the act of seeking out unspoiled nature was fraught, in that visiting places and exposing them makes one complicit in their destruction. So the idea behind the work was to use working methods or compositions that obscured the subjects and protected their locations or identities. In any case, I subjected myself to the same treatment by applying digital camouflage.

I made the photo on my own without a self timer. I just triggered the shutter on the camera, ran back to my mark, triggered the flashes, and ran back to the camera. It was dark enough to do so without disrupting the photo. I think I used my 110mm Super Symmar XL. You can see a higher quality version of the final photo at my website, along with the rest of the project. http://stuartrichardson.com/albums/undercurrent/

We, meaning humans are part of nature, all LIFE fouls...

    or do we we

Earth will live long after we ALL are dust

    The tectonic plates will bury

    and it will start again

another perspective...that all life (except us) recycles and replenishes.

Us? We removed ourselves from the above equation when we learned how to create fire...and its been downhill ever since.

Every poison, pollution, whatever that we humans have made

Is still made on this planet

    That may change

Even WWIII will be man/woman made

and I fully believe our planet will shake that off in time

    a long time

That is cold comfort to the thousands of species and habitats that have already been lost and continue to be threatened every day. These things will not recover, and their wonder will forever pass from the universe, and it is due directly to us. Rather than taking solace at the fact that one day our species will be dead and things may recover, I grieve for the things we have yet to lose, but will inevitably be crushed under the weight of our collective apathy and greed. Optimism is not a rational response to the world we currently inhabit. I wish it were, but it is like saying a glass is half full when its already spilled over on the ground.

You look really guilty like you just kicked a poodle in the nuts. I needs me some Delta 100 in my life this year.

All these self portraits is reminding me about getting those spiratone (I'm sure there are others), self timers. Remember Spiratone! Yikes.
