a lot of point and shoot cameras in 5x4 use expensive wide angle lens,at 90mm, would it still be possible to cover 4x5 with a 105-103 lens from a 8 on 120 roll film camera.? would it give a wide angled shot? .I was thinking of taking a roll flim.camera apart to see

Robert, I don't think most 105 lenses for 6x9 would cover 4x5... but it's worth a shot.

My own point + shoot 4x5 design uses a Schneider Angulon (f/6.8) which can be had for as low as $100... Not so expensive, and it's very lightweight as well.

I have seen some 4X5 shots purported to be done with a 105mm lens from an old folder. They work for macro but I still have my doubts that they will cover at infinty. I've built a couple of fixed focus 4X5 point and shoots. I use Wollensak 90mm f/12.5 wide angle lenses. Very tiny and light.

With a LF P&S there are no movements, so the acceptable image circle may be smaller and still cover 4x5 format. Any of the old lenses that were used on the press cameras would work...Grafics had a verry compact 90mm. Any lense for a 6x7cm or 6x9cm robably won't cover at infinity. Test the coverage of a prospective lense on a 4x5 view camera mounted in a tgemporary cardboard lense board.

Don't forget the 90mm f/6.8 Angulon, which is a compact and inexpensive lens compared to the newer 90mm f/8 style (Fujinon, Super Angulon, Nikkor SW, etc.). A while ago I tested my late-serial-number version (11,3xx,xxx) and was stunned to see that it covers 5x7 straight on, albeit with some corner softening, so it could even do for a 5x7 P&S.

It appears quite a few people can happily live with dark/soft edges, so those MF lenses may be usable depending on your purpose/tolerance even if they wouldn't "strictly" cover 4x5.

i use the wollensak 90mm f/6.8 i got from sandy ritz, cost $100 really light and very good optics, came mounted on the board for my camera and all (tho that was coincidence)

Hi Robert,

some 6x9cm vintage folding cameras have more than sufficient coverage; the Plaubel Makina late generation Anticomar 100mm f2.9 covers 5x4" with even illumination and its companion Weitw. Orthar 73mm f6.8 covers 5x4" with corner clipping. The standard Agfa Apotars are less successful with respect to field illumination.

There are a few lens old ones that might work, If you can found them , with regard I have an old Ilex wide angle 4 inch which based on the ilex info I found it is a Medium wide angle lens would cover 5x7 , there are out there but you need to hunt them down! good luck
