The best viewpoint was out in the crashing surf. So my assistant held my Zone VI Lightweight tripod firmly down in the sand, as the waves rolled in. Sinar Alpina 115mm f6.8 Grandagon, Tri-X pro Red filter D76 1:1 8x10 fibre print Dektol. This was just before I discovered the Sinar Norma

    Burt's Department Store
    by Greg Couch, on Flickr

I shot this as part of a larger series on the remains of IBM Plant #1 in Endicott, NY. This used to be Burt's Department Store, one of the fanciest places to shop in Endicott and right down the road from the IBM factories. I used a combination of 4x5 and 35mm T-Max 100 film to document what was left behind when IBM pulled out of the area. I like to scout first with 35mm to identify shots like this which are good candidates for the shift capabilities of large format. While I have Nikon PC-E lenses, it's just so much easier to compose and nail focus on 4x5 ground glass.
