Besler 45MCRX cold light head conversion question

A number of years ago I purchased a Zone VI cold light head for my Beseler 45. At the time I discovered that in order to install it I had to remove the entire condenser head assembly which meant also removing the upper filter drawer. As I normally print with variable contrast paper that meant using the under the lens filter holder which I do not want to use. Has anyone out there done a conversion with this head that retains the upper filter drawer or have any suggestions as to how to go about such a procedure?

I don't have the normal head since I got the dichroic one about 30 years ago, but I seem to remember that the lamp house will seperate from the filter drawer by three set screws. (I could be wrong since it has been about 30 years since I took it off and sold it at a swap meet.)

I made myself a little filter drawer apparatus out of some black matboard. It took a bit of hacking about with the X-Acto knife and Elmer's glue, but it works fine. I am able to (gently) swap filters without disturbing the focus. It's a bit of a crock, but it works. Someday I'll bend one up out of metal, but the matboard special has sufficed for a couple of years now.

Not 100% sure about the Beseler in question, but you may want to keep the diffuser of the coldlight close to the negative, otherwise you could get a hotspot. On my 10x10 coldlight the filter drawer is actually between the light tube and the diffuser; it's part of the cold light assembly. The 10x10 filters are a pain to use (it's way up over your head to change them), and I had been looking to use under the lens filters...I guess the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence...

I simply lay the 6" square filters over the top of the negative carrier. The filter stays far enough away from the negative that any dust on the filter is so far out of focus it has no effect.

I wouldn't be afraid of putting them under the lens. You will never notice.
