Jac, where is the NE? Do you mean the Boundary Waters?
Chicago area Des Plaines River had a lot of poisonous snakes, they cleared them by bounty in 1920 I thought. But never got them all it seems. http://www.wheelinghistoricalsociety...m5/Albump1.htm
Southern Illinois they are a protected species. I have stepped right over one sleeping in a coil on a warm rock on a cold day. We close a road for them. http://thesouthern.com/news/local/en...87b0cd3.html#3
My boots say “95 of snake bites are below the knee.” I hope the Texas rattlers have read that.
My co-worker got bit by a diamondback. He panicked and ran (probably the worst thing you can do). Then he had an allergic reaction to the anti-venom, which is made with horse serum. After he survived, I kidded him about how anything horse-related could disagree with him bc he was a bona-fide cowboy.
I also carry an Extractor snake bite kit, which some debate if it’s effective at all. Some jobs I walk 10 miles across rattlesnake country, and do my best to avoid the rocks and brush piles. Local K-9 search and rescue team here have their dogs injected with anti-venom and give the dog ten (10) Benadryl 25mg capsules if they get bit in the field. So I carry Benadryl too bc if it’s good enough for a dog...

Sorry I was not clear. I'm originally from Rhode Island (RI) and North-East means to me the New England states above RI, and from my experience Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and up-state New York. The copperhead experiences were in rural Connecticut - an area no longer rural. You've seen the depressing change, too.
I just finished a HAER job in Louisiana with airboat access and 4x5 setups the marsh. Big fat water moccasins abounding. I was wearing waders with strap-on snake guards. Priceless. I look carefully as I walk.

Maybe Oren can start a snake safety thread.

Nothing too special about this one but she's mine and has been since the 90's.
