Hello. N00b in Oakland, CA area

I'm new to LF. I was looking for something adjustable to build a pinhole camera into. I happened upon a Calumet 45N in good condition with everything but the front lens board and lens. Now I'm thinking I want to not only use it as a platform for pinhole/zoneplate but also for what it was designed for... Let the madness begin.

My other cameras include a Canon 30D, Canon 300D, 1968 Nikon FTn, a couple of Holgas for arty-farty stuff and a Kodak Duaflex II that I use for TTV shooting.

I'm sure I'll have tons of questions.

    Welcome aboard!
Have you thought of exploring Mare Island with that 4x5 of yours?

    Thanks.

Mare Island would be a good start. I was also thinking about the cranes at the Oakland port.

I don't know how close you will be able to get to the cranes without being considered a terrorist. Most terrorists use 4x5 and larger cameras, as you probably know, or will come to find out.

Mare Island would be a better choice. I have photographed there often with view cameras and not been bothered too much by the roving patrols. Just be sure to obey all signs in the posted areas. It is a fascinating place, have fun!

Welcome to the LF Forum. I agree with Merg - Mare Island is pretty cool.

Hi Ralph, nice shot, it brings back memories of my first visit with you, Will and the gang. 8x10, right?

What you see in your shot is pretty much intact. The drydock is aging nicely, and I finally got a decent shot of it with my lens pressed against the chain-link fence. Still a great place to photograph (while it lasts). The buildings I photographed at Fort Ord in 2006 have all met the wrecking ball.
