    Focal Plane Shutters

    Hello All

Hope this is correct the place to ask this unusual question? Am new to this sort of thing so here goes..

Is it possible to obtain a focal plane shutter mechanism for a Sinar (F/P/Norma etc) system? I am using a variable aperture device (glorified pinhole) and want to have better control of exposure - especially 1/2 and 1/4 second range.

Hopefully someone can offer gems of advice or at least guide me - no worries if not.

    Thanks in advance

    Andy M

It seems simpler to mount the pinhole in a conventional shutter unless the pinhole coverage is so wide that it vignettes.

Sinar makes a shutter for the P/X/C/F camera family (not the Norma).
It fits behind the lens, between the front of the bellows and the front frame.

    These shutters are readily available.

THIS IS PERFECT WRONG! They even made the shutter first for the Norma! So it fits also to the Norma!!!!
So do not speak if you are not sure!!!

As Leigh said, for that purpose, the Sinar/Copal behind the lens shutter will do perfectly well - that one has been made for decades and is very widespread. But get one complete with the original cable release - the release as a separate spare tends to be more expensive than a release-less working shutter. And stay away from the later electronic ones, unless you have a electronics day job - it is growing increasingly hard to keep these things afloat...

I did not say there was no product available for the Norma.

I said that the product for the P/X/C/F series cameras would not fit the Norma.

My statement reflects the current product line ("makes", not "made").

The only difference between the two that I can find is the auto-aperture scale and control mounted to the side of the shutter. A later Auto-Aperture shutter will fit on a Norma, but it will inhibit axial tilts because that scale and control will be pressed up against the upright. To test that, I just mounted a later shutter to a Norma-era intermediate standard, and I did have to remove the axial tilt scale, which is just a washer with a dial on it. A Norma-era shutter will work fine on a later Sinar, except that it won't have the auto-aperture capability (which is not relevant here anyway, or at all for many of us).

The release cable is the same between the two. The link to the rear standard, for closing the shutter when the film holder is inserted, is not, but it is also not needed if one is happy opening and closing the shutter manually as needed.

And near as I can tell, the only shutter currently offered by Sinar is the eShutter, which replaces a Copal 0 (and therefore sized for all the short "digital" lenses). They still sell the accessories for the Auto-Aperture shutter (such as the special cable release), but not the shutter itself.

The electronic shutters they sold a few years ago, including the Digital Shutter and the later Expolux shutter have their own issues, but those were not being discussed.

To the OP: The Sinar shutters mount behind the lens board, and are behind-the-lens leaf shutters, not focal-plane shutters. But they will work for your purpose. I once thought I would modify a Speed Graphic focal-plane shutter to a Sinar, but after seeing the Sinar auto-aperture shutter, I realized that would require much futile fabrication. I waited for KEH to sell a Sinar shutter for an acceptable price, and then bought it.

    So it doesn't fit.

That's what I said in my original post.

Either it does or it doesn't. Saying that 'it fits except...' doesn't work.
