Can be done if you take the time to "calibrate" the digital SLR meter with your own shooting, but in the end, I find my analog Pentax spot meter to be the most consistantly accurate meter I've ever used.

as for your Sekonic 428, I use the workhorse 398 myself as a backup, so if your meter is working properly (IE - nobody has dropped in a lake or something like that ), you might have the solution in your hands. Try it out and see, but before you take off on your trip.

Many of us used our old cameras for metering light when we first began shooting large format. For a few years when I exposed just a modest amount of sheet film each year, I used an old OM-4T 5 SLR degree spot meter. Worked ok for limited work but compared to using a digital light meter, the process is tedious, requires mathematical calculations in the field, and is thus prone to errors especially in the heat of the battle.

I've found that Fuji slide film corresponds very well with my Nikon DSLR. I can take the picture with the DSLR, adjust the exposure based on what I see on the LCD, and use that same value for the 4x5 camera. Comes out perfect every time. For B&W, I don't need any sort of meter at all.
