    Re: Rocks and stones

While a shorter exposure would give a bit more definition (and perhaps a more "character) to the surf...this can be a difficult decision to make because of the nature of wave propagation. In other words, the interactions of waves and rocks taking time to move across a frame can be too long to capture in a shorter exposure, and thus leave you with but one very "exciting" rock formation in the scene, while the remaining ones remain a bit too "quiet" as they will not reflect any wave activity.

Thinking about this...I will sometimes give a single frame several shorter (one to three second) exposures - each timed to a wave's interaction with particular rock formations across the breadth of the scene. Either by mounting my lens in a press shutter, or by simply holding my dark slide over the lens until the wave moves a bit further across the scene. This technique can either be very effective...or a total failure, but often worth a try.

+1. It’s as if the second was another moment, the light from the right seems stronger there, just by cropping. Interesting. I would certainly not discard the first.
