    silverfast vs. epson NOISE LEVEL

Hello - i just got a cheapy scanner, epson 3200. i was having a problem with noise, could not get a scan w/out noise - tried everything I could think of. then i tried a demo version of silverfast, and the noise went away completely. would you expect this? or is there likely something im doing wrong in the epson software? the photos are pushed to show the noise. (at least, i think that is "noise" ????) thanks everyone

I am no specialist for scanning, but to me, that looks more like heavy JPEG compression artefacts.

I do use a V700 with the Espon software, but never had anything similar happening.

Does the Epson software have the ICE option and if so, did you have it turned on? You cannot use ICE for B&W film - everything looks extremely contrasty if ICE is used - just like your Epson scan. What you've got is not noise!

Doesn't look like noise to me either. Also, doesn't look like the white and black points are properly set in either scan.

It looks more like posterization than anything else. Neither noise nor jpeg artifacts have that blocked up look to large areas. It almost looks like a photograph saved as GIF.

    What are your output settings?

I agree with Marko - looks like severe posterisation. There shouldn't be that much difference between the Epson software and Silverfast so check to see that you have the same settings on both.
