Many thanks. First attempt with XTOL. Its a bit sharper, bit less grain, but seems a lot more developed than ID11..?

All normal characteristics of XTOL, in addition to being less toxic than some other developers.

Thanks for confirming. That was stock, and looks a little 'harsher' than ID11. Will XTOL 1+1 add more grain and look flatter?

I'm not sure, maybe some other more experienced members could confirm that... I have only used XTOL at 1+1 personally, and only a few times so far, but I may make it my normal go to now. I typically use good old D76 (and sometimes TMAX RS developer).

judging by your posted example, I may want to try stock XTOL sometime to see what it does.

Snow and light at Beech Hill, Rockport Maine. February 2020. 4x5 preanniversary speed graphic with 9" Gundlach Hyperion soft focus lens. Ilford fp4+ film in pyrocat hdc.

The imperfect repetition and crafted tones of negative space are sort of Degas ballet painting inspired, though I don't think of such exact comparisons when out the woods shooting. It's just a way of organizing shapes in ways that work according to art history.

Jason, the light in the branches makes it dance! A lovely image with one of my very favorite lenses.

Thanks Jim. Here's crazier dance. Maybe dubstep or disco. Same lens and film, different spot on the trail.
