Sooooo... I read some time back that it takes a half hour for your eyes to get use to the darkness. Pirates of old used a patch to go from deck top to below where it was dark. They would just move the patch for viewing in the dark. I have tried it in lower light conditions and it works really well but my wife is laughing herself to death and says she will not go into public with me and "patch", so I go alone!

A patch is handy and works well when it is necessary to frequently go from the darkroom to a well lit area. For instance - I teach at a community college. On lab nights I spend my time going from the well it inspection area into the printing room. When I use a patch I gain vision faster when going into the printing room.
I don't see an advantage when working with a dark cloth while outdoors making photographs.
