    Get out your spotmeter!!

This optical illusion is not only the best I have ever seen, it really makes one think twice about visualization. I am going to spot meter a lot more carefully in the future!

I can't believe my eyes when I look at this and my brain still refuses to accept it. I had to print out the page, cut out the two squares in question, and put them side by side before I would believe it.

Yeah, it's crazy - similar tricks can be played on the mind with the spoken word: watch the lips, you hear one thing; close you're eyes you hear what was really said.

It is a good argument for using incident readings.

Thanks -- that'll help rationalize the cost of the new spotmeter when my wife sees the charge on the next Visa bill!

Gordon, I'm seldom brave enough to disagree with you, but reflected reading would work perfectly fine in this situation, too. The difference is only apparent, and created in the human brain as an interpretation of the local contrast.
