    Lens caps

Can anyone recommend a good source for generic lens caps? I'm looking for a cap for the rear element of my Ilex Caltar, its diameter is about 56mm.

    Thanks a lot!

Typically a camera repair shop or a shop that sells used cameras and equipment will typically have a box of spare caps around- Often they dont even charge for them (at least in my experience). Most of the time, you just have to ask

Kaiser makes push-on caps in 53, 54, 55, 56, 57 and 58mm (among other sizes) and these are available from any camera store (although they might have to order them). List price is $8.10.

You can get the Kaiser lens caps from B&H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com). Just search on KALCxx, where you replace the xx with the size in mm, like KALC52 for a 52mm push-on cap.

Like Eric, I get them (used) from a local shop that deals in older cameras. They have a drawer filled with them. No charge since they know me -- otherwise, they're about fifty cents each.

I had poor results ordering generic caps by mail. If you can find a local source where you can actually try it on it would be better.

This is only one of several pages of generic lenscaps. They also sell push-ons.

If you are willing to pay $10-15 dollars each for them, B&H sells caps in almost any size you could need.

I'm like Ernest, I've never had much luck ordering generic lens caps by mail. The problem is getting the size right, my measurements never seem to quite conincide with the caps. For a nice fitting lens cap - tight enough to stay on but not so tight that putting it on an removing it is difficult - you need to be accurate to the mm I think. You'll need to do better than "about 56 mm" if you order by mail.

I've had no problems getting generic mail-order caps to work. You just measure your lens with an inexpensive digital caliper.
