    Use of 8x10 Film Holders

I will be moving up to 8x10 in a month or so when I get my new old Dorff reassembled. A few 8x10 holders I purchased had two sided tape in them. My understanding is this is to keep the sheet from sagging. With 4x5 and 5x7 this is not an issue. How many of you 8x10 shooters use two sided tape? I suspect there are many who do not use tape. Is it considered necessary or just a good thing to do or does not really make a difference? For those that do not tape have you ever had any film flatness issues?

    Thanks

    Kevin

I've used it and it does work -- also makes loading and unloading a pain.

Now I just give the holder a good "clunk" on the bottom of my palm to get the film settled. My issue was not flatness, but the film moving during long exposures.

I've never used tape - the last thing I need in my holders is little bits of residual adhesive to pick up dust and gum things up.

Once in a great while a large sheet of film will "pop" in the middle of a long exposure, due to temperature/humidity issues. Under circumstances where that's likely to be a problem, the risk can be reduced by pulling the darkslide and letting the film equilibrate before opening the shutter.

I don't use tape. I've never had the need.

I read someplace that a smudge of honey would be used.

I just seat mine well and hope for the best.

I don't use tape, either, opting for re-seating the film in the holder prior to exposure (both 4x5 and 8x10). I might consider it, however, if I were pointing the camera straight down or at a steep angle, where gravity might make the center of the film bulge.

I've heard about the technique but never found it necessary.

I never used tape. I never even though of using tape. I've read just about everything AA and EW ever wrote. Can't recall that they ever used tape. Now those guys shot about a million times more 8x10 than anyone on this forum.

I think things like this are problems invented by rich equipment collectors who fondle their equipment and never shoot anything.

    Kevin, don't worry, be happy.
