I have a 4x5 Toyo what should the tripod support?

I have a Toyo 4x5 that weighs about 4 pound with lens and holder. Is there a factor that I can multiply to come up with a figure that would tell me which tripod to pick? If two tripods hold the same weight, I assume that I should pick the one with the least segments. I am looking for carbon fiber. I want light, light for backpacking. I need every ounce that I can muster. At home I have a nice Berlebeck that I really like. I know I can add weight to steady it somewhat in the field but don't want that to enter into the calculation.

    Thanks,

For backpacking I suggest physically checking out any tripod your are considering with your camera attached. There are many fine carbon tripods on the market. What you really should concern yourself with is the strength and weight of the tripod head. A great tripod with a crappy head is worthless. A great head that weighs a ton is not good either for backpacking.

You don't have to buy from them, or get a Gitzo, but here is a great guide to compare weight, size, leg segments, etc.

Thanks for the site. So from the table what weight should I pick/ 11 pounds which is roughly 3 times my camera weight or the 17 pound which is roughly 4 times my camera weight? The head is a different issure and I am just getting into the legs.

    Thanks,
    Richard

I have a Gitzo 1227, which is rated for 17.6 lb. I use it mostly with a 3 lb Toho. I don't a lighter tripod to be sure that vibrations are adequately dampened.

The 1227 with a 1 lb ballhead is 4.4 lb which is not troublsome to hand carry all day when hiking.
