I have a set of 4" gels (and polyesters). They are in the little envelopes they came in and I put those in a little purse that I got at a hobby store. I have used glass, but they are too expensive and distorting for the 72mm XL.

Sometimes I carry gels and tape them in place. I make a "tube" of black photo tape rolled and stuck back to itself then stick that around the front outside edge of the lens. The gel goes right there on top, stuck to the tube of tape around the front of the lens. Blue painters tape would work well too. You can also attach them to the rear of the lens using this same method. A few gels and a bit of tape is super light and compact.
I have a Tamrac filter pouch. Mine holds 8 filters (I only need two sizes and I carry a red, orange, green, and polarizer for each size). They're easily accessable and the pouch seems to keep them pretty clean. I tape the filter size and lens(es) each fits on the outside of each individual pouch. But Photoshop has minimized my use any filters other than polarizers, of which I only need two. So lately the pouch has stayed home and I just carry the two polarizers in their original case.

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way when you do criticize them you'll be
a mile away and you'll have their shoes.
I use the Tamrac Folding Filter Wallet seen here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...goryNavigation
It being transparent on one side, you could see different filters easily. The only problem I have had is that it collects dust and may cause smudges if not cleaned periodically.

LIke robert, I use a small(ish) pelican case (1500 series) for all my gels and filters, depending on what I'm shooting with, there may be a meter and loupe in there too. I find it handy to just take the filter case with me, and I have all my gels (lots and lots of them), round filters, adapters and the like in one place.

I wrap them in cheap or old lens cloths and stuff the lot in some pocket of my bag. I filter very sparingly so telling them apart is an easy task.
Fifteen year old thread
There're more recent products on the market. Has anyone tried one of the MindShift Gear filter pouches? Other suggestions?
Nope. I still use my 15+ year old Tamrac filter wallets.
