    Choosing which forums to view

Some members have asked how to filter things so they get the view they want. Here's how.

To exclude or include specific forums from view, you can bookmark search URLs that allow you to do this. These will be about the same as the Unified View, but filtered as desired.

The forums to include/exclude are listed in the URL as a comma-separated list of forumid's as shown in the examples. You get the forumid from the end of the forum's URL after the "f=".

In the example URLs prefix each with the base Forum home URL "http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum".

To get all posts (&getdaily parameter) in the past number of days: (30 days in these examples)

To get posts since your last visit: (the "&days=" parameter is irrelevant when using "&do=getnew")

You can also change the sort order by including a &sortby=<value> parameter in the url. The <value> can be one of:
    • threadstart (to sort by the time the thread was posted)
    • replycount (by number of replies)
    • views (by total number of views)
    • title (by thread title)
    • forum (by forum name)

Example: Since your last visit, exclude the Lounge, and order the rest in groups by Forum:
    <home url>/search.php?&do=getnew&exclude=17&sortby=forum

Feel free to ask here for more examples if needed.

Excellent solution, Tom. I knew there was a reason we call you "The Genius" behind your back.

Re: Choosing which forums to view

I tried the directions here and came up with

    <homeurl>/search.php?&do=getnew&exclude=7,21&sortby=forum

It eliminates the D***** forums but it seems to show all posts in the other forums, even old ones, and they are all over the place datewise. How do I show only new ones, and/or sort them by date and forum?

OK, last time it seemed to work. Maybe it just needed to sit for a while to register.

Yeah it has waits for you to be offline for a while fo the 'last visit' date to be set to something more recent. Otherwise you can use the 'mark forums read' from the Quick Links in the menu to catch everything up.

    Tom,

Might be a good idea to make this thread a "sticky".

Re: Choosing which forums to view

It works, but only partly. At least two issues remain:

    1) when I perform that search and bookmark it the software changes the URL to something like

    http://www.largeformatphotography.in...searchid=16174

and when I return later using that bookmarked URL it says no posts meet my search criteria, even though I know there are new posts. I have to paste the actual search url in each time in order for it to work.

    2) That search doesnt get only new posts since my last visit, and since it is sorted by forum there can be dozens of old posts on the front page of the search results, and new posts in other forums on the second page or even further down.

You have to bookmark the original URL, since for some odd reason, the software changes it to that 'searchid' thing. I think most browsers let you bookmark a link just by right-clicking on the link.

Oh, on point #2, I assume you're using the 'getnew' format. It selects new posts from your last visit time (the system decides what that is). You may need to use 'mark forums read' from the Quick Links menu item to catch up if there are old posts showing up.
