    Steve Sint Set Shop Tutorials

Remember Steve Sint? He used to have a column in one of the Photo Magazines. He is affiliated with "NYC Set Shop" and I've been studying his excellent tutorials, which cover mainly still life shooting (one of my interests) as well as general photographic info. Check out his tutorials, they are excellent IMO. Has great ideas and I've been building a lot of what I see.

I've also been buying "stuff" from NYC Set Shop, they are a great resource! You might want to take a look at what they offer!

    All good

I think we need a generic studio lighting thread

Include ALL studio lighting, including North Light Studios

I am about to turn my 6X30' well covered porch into one

Not perfect, buI I can add daylight

Perhaps a thread called 'Studio Lighting LF'

We are a confustion of threads

The tutorials are a little dated, but still relevant for commercial still life photographers. After studying Steve Sint's lessons, I've incorporated a lot of new ideas based on what I've seen. I've built some of the featured items, accumulated some items from the internet, and ordered items from Set Shop directly. Placed an order super quick service and good prices paid as well. They have many more things I'd like to have. But it all happily fits right now in my little studio.

Here I'm using his light modifiers I've built (three of them) and they are perfect-o. Cheap to make and made to last.

    Thanks cgratham,

NYC Set Shop Diffusion Frame Rosco Lux 2 Sides Broncolor C200 Studio Setup by Nokton48, on Flickr

Ideas from NYC Set Shoppe shown in my little studio. 20x24 Rosco Tough Lux (from B&H) taped both sides to homemade Set Shop Diffusion Frames, have three of these can be positioned -like anywhere-. Shot some B&W frames from various cameras of this setup, as a sort of test. This digishot is my new Sony Nex 7 with the 16mm F2.8 lens, and the Ultra Wide Converter XD.75. Makes the equivalent of a 16mm F2.8 lens with 35mm, and recticlinear, not fisheye conversion. But they do also make a fisheye converter, too. I'm leaving my 8x10 Norma Reflex Camera set up from above, all the time. Getting ready to use it again. Great for overhead 8x10's. I am going to be getting soon for it, an 8x10 Sinar Norma 210mm F8 Super Angulon from a friend. That will go on this camera, right now it has the 165mm F8 Norma Super Angulon on it. The 121mm F8 Norma Super Angulon is my widest tabletop lens right now and I'm content with this trio.

    Hi Daniel,
Thanks for showing your setup. My "studio" is not very big either, but this definitely gives me inspiration. I like the idea of building one's own diffusion screens. Question: is that a lens board or mirror leaning against the diffusion screen opposite the lighting side?

It's a plexiglass mirror with a hole cut in, you can put it in front to poke through your lens (front fill). I bought it from Marty Rickard, you can buy them used on the internet. It's called the "Perfect Poser". Or use a plexiglass mirror.

    Hi Daniel,
Thanks, I haven't heard of the Perfect Poser before. Seems like it could be handy.

Set Shop Stuff Accumulated Ready to Use by Nokton48, on Flickr

Here is all the Set Shop Stuff I have accumulated and ready to use now. I made the "Sand Box" and ordered three pounds of "Sanibel Sand" which came from a place in Florida that has 50 colors of sand cheap. Armature Wire is cheaper at Set Shop; I bought three different diameters. The Machinist's Angle pieces in 1" 2" 3" from Ebay. The heavy steel blocks also came in bars, also Ebay. I cut the 1.25" steel bars in 1" 2" and 3" with my Lil' Machine Shop mini band saw. I want to make more of these and buy more angle pieces, too. They are --handy-- for holding and propping big things up!
