Linhof levelling head with 90mm base - 3/8 screw?

I have a Linhof leveling head with 90mm base. It is grey from the 1950's or later. Mine comes with 1/4 inch screw. I would a 3/8 screw. I know you can put a 1/4 to 3/8 adapter in the camera mount but theses are not secure enough. I removed the leveling head's top plate (2 screws help lock it in place) to see if a new 3/8 inch can be installed. Looks like they are interchangeable but where do I get the 3/8 screw part. Later Linhof catalogs do not have this head, only the one with the 77mm base. I had this head recondition at Paula's in the UK (Leigh-on-Sea) about 3 years ago but did not think to ask about this. I have broken a few of those 1/4 to 3/8 adapters by over tightening them, they are only brass and break fairly easily.

I can't help with your question, but would point out that if you're breaking the brass adapters, they're being tightened too much. Also, that they break is one of their benefits. It prevents over tightening from damaging the camera's socket.

I buy only the most expensive adapters B&H sells

    They have a $27 Linhof

However I prefer to never use them

I did make a 90mm alu puck and drilled it for a real grade 8 bolt

I posted it in DIY years ago

Before you get too deep I REALLY don't think you should use a WEAK Linhof tripod for your globe trotting

    A 45 lbs capacity

    B No parts

    C Very hard to fix

I suggest only a like new Majestic with the big head and 2 OE screws

This one is the right type but a bit shabby https://www.ebay.com/itm/17540393295...gaAuYAEALw_wcB

I use a Majestic on my 90mm Linhof Tripod ONLY in studio

The Linhof one is brass! I assumed the cheap chrome ones were brass, maybe not. I don't think my 1960's heavy tripod is weak just the connection for the cameras has proven a weak point when relying on 1/4 screws. The 3/8 screws are more substantial. I have 4 or 5 90mm heads to mount my 4x5/4x10 Kardan TL and the 5x7 Kardan Bi. When you are globe trotting with Honda Ridgeline and Airstream Basecamp 16X what's a few extra pounds thrown in the back!
