Re: Push/Pull processing if Scanning Negative

Well, some of my initial return to 4x5 have been somewhat encouraging. I shot HP5 rated at 320 and reduced development by about 10% (~8min), Illford DD-X 1:4. Still refining my metering style using my Zone VI modified Pentax spot meter. Negatives were scanned using the Epson 850 flatbed. I was pleasantly surprised of the quality of scans and after post processing in Lightroom and PS, I feel the results were satisfactory, at least at this early juncture. Would love to hear your thoughts.

treat your scanner as a camera ps/lr as if it is part of your development process. do a film test (bracket exposure and development) and see which film your scanner and end result likes the best. a lot of people stop short of this and they really shouldn't.

I've found out that my processing and printing style are different that everyone I have met
and people should figure out what is right for them. developer matters, how someone processes matters
how someone's shutters are calibrated matters, so what works for me does not work for anyone else.
couple of sheets of film, maybe 4 using a dark slide to bracket takes very little time and effort, but if you care
about what you scan and print, it can make the difference between images that are OK and images that are great.

Greg, you remember what year or abouts? I will try and dig it out.

The short version is that satisfactory scan results do not guarantee an easy printing job in the darkroom. Period. The most extreme proof of that is the Ferrania P30, which some say is the best film for scanning. Wet prints with this film are a nightmare

I thought you'd provide which film scans the best for printing. I don't ordinarily print but have found Portra, Tmax, and slide films scan the best and easiest to edit, adjust the colors, and then display electronically.
