she's good, and spot on. people replace what little memories they have with photographs they think are their memories and then they
create realities and lore having to do with the photographs instead of the memories . to quote Jim, people are strange

I do not photograph to preserve or serve memory.

If photo rob us of our memory, then hand-computers do also, along with the ability to reason.

Yes, they do… to a certain extent. Some use computers and the internet to facilitate intelligent thought; others clearly use them as a replacement.

Yes, it is only to an certain extent for both (photography/computers). The unwashed masses do not care one way or the other.

If I wanted to be safe, I'd go digital.
And if I wanted to live photographically dangerously, I'd go digital.

    and

If I wanted to be safe, I'd keep with landscapes
But I want to live photographically dangerously, so I am sticking with landscapes.

Much ado about nothing. Kinda like all the debate over "rosebud" in Citizen Kane. Someone well known says something, and it supposedly has meaning. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. Doesn't affect me either way.

Notes Sally's change in direction and why.
Some have posted Sally is a "good" photographer, why_?_

Memories are connected to emotional experiences and emotions. Images can and do cause emotional responses from it's viewer, how emotions from viewing images can bend the previous emotional based memories connected to a specific image.

Some of the reasons why an expressive image and endure the test of time and the humanoid experience.

Thanks Bernice. As I said back in post #12, "Does anyone know the context in which Mann said this?"

So it's from View Camera. The first two pages refer to Mann leaving landscape photography behind, but the lead quote isn't in those pages. I assume that Simmons didn't just make it up. Is it possible for you to scan the rest of the article and post it?

Yes, possible to post the remainder of this VC interview with Sally Mann. She began part of her art fotos as a Landscape photographer, in 1979 she and her hubby started a family.. about that time, Sally gave up Landscape fotos, then began to focus on making images of her kids growing up and daily life. This was an experience that has shared commonality in many ways. 1992 was a remarkable time for photography in many ways. Many, many, many wonderful memories and experiences from and during that era.

One of the features of images made by Sally, they are NOT technically ideal, they are much about content and expressive impact.
