A small notebook. I note what I need to note, not what a template requires.
I have tried several apps but at the end the notebook is faster and I’m free to note what it’s important depending on the shot.
The only app I loved is Reciprocity Timer, but the developer has stopped updating it and with the new version of iOS it doesn’t work anymore.

I have a template Google doc where I can record all exposure/subject/technical details. I make copies of this (named for sheet # and film type) for each new sheet of film I load into holders. These are stored in my Google Drive, and then when in the field I fill them out using my phone.

I also carry a physical notebook as a backup if I'm in a location with no signal.

I didn't know that writing down the exposure data for the film was that important. I guess it's important of someone is going to do expansion / contraction development but for someone who just sunny 11 every exposure or makes paper negatives via intuition and knowing the light conditions and the paper conditions. ... it's not like the same exact exposure, subject is ever going to happen again. tablet pen paper stylus mental note, sticky note, note ON the negative like an autographic .. whatever flicks your bick. I make coptic stitched and pamphlet stitched booklets to jot things down in but it's just the performance of jotting it down I never read any of my notes afterwards, seeing it ends up me writing flaming globes of Sigmund

Just checked on the prices for the Rite-in-the-Rain 4.625"x7" stapled No.311FX notebooks that I use. Lowest Amazon price was a 3 pack for $15. Directly from Rite-in-the-Rain is $15.95 for three...or $6 each. The way I use them I get 8 (plus/minus a couple) images recorded on a page. Cheap, waterproof, usable for a long time, bright yellow so I won't lose it (other colors available but why tempt fate?!)

Looking at some of my older ones with the price tags still on the notebooks...they are all under $4.00 and some under $3.00 in the late 80s.

I used them for the first time when I spent 3 months hitchhiking in NZ with a 4x5 in 1981. (Deardorff Special knock-off). I took one of the 3.25"x4.625" versions "to save weight". Still have it and all the ones since, except one that was stolen with the 5x7 it was with. All my photo work locally, regionally and across the seas are in a pile of these books right next to me. Picking a notebook at random and opening a page, I find myself along Little Lost Man Creek in Redwood National Park on November 1st, 2009...making two 4x10 images on a sheet of 8x10 TMax400 and a sweet little 210mm process lens. Never printed them, in the notebook is "some wind' and it is underlined. Might have been too much.

Nice little photographic diaries of the last four decades. Another random pick brought me to April 14th, 1993 and this image with the 5x7 of two redwoods (PT/pd). One of my favorite images made, and I was backpacking close to these trees last week (with the 4x5). F45 for 32 seconds. Developed in HC-110, Dil.B for 20 minutes.

Vaugh, you make a good testimonial for the brand. You ought to let them know about the books you kept with your notes. Maybe they'll make you a deal to advertise for them.

You make a good point. I keep thinking the records can be analyzed so I don't make similar mistakes in future shots. I guess that's helped me 5-10% of the time, probably not worth the effort. Of course, other photographers seem to be impressed you can tick off all the settings of your shots and therefore you must know what you're doing. So there's that.

Whatever tech floats one's boat is fine and dandy, but recording tens of mostly superfluous data points about an exposure is about the spreadsheet.

You make a good point. I keep thinking the records can be analyzed so I don't make similar mistakes in future shots. I guess that's helped me 5-10% of the time, probably not worth the effort. 5-10% isn't bad
if it helps in any way why not, I mean it's only a few minutes of time spent jotting
stuff down... I haven't found anything helps me in what I am doing ... so I don't bother
the only thing I write down are how many grams of FAC and it's evil twin I need when making cyanotypes
and even then I've realized it doesn't matter . it's like when I make caffenol, I don't bother measuring anymore

I didn't realize we were supposed to be keeping photo data. I don't think I've ever recorded anything like that.

I don't really either but it gets annoying when I can't date a photograph (cuz I can be lazy that way). I might record shutter and f stop but that's about it. I don't Zone so don't worry about recording meter reading placements.

I think I'm the kind of photographer who would benefit from fields that would lend themselves to LF etc..

or I just keep writing on painters tape and just accept that I'm not a record/note keeper lol
