If I didn't take a pic of this sign, did I really travel Route 66??
I liked the sun position and the 40mm lens+R25 filter did well here not flaring much.

Sneaker Wave

I got pretty wet from this one. I was waiting for the wave to crash onto the rock, which was making some nice spray, when I saw a good wave coming and clicked the shutter. It was a bigger wave than I thought and hit just the right angle...
Yes...with the "objects are closer than they appear" 40mm, you'd be getting wet for sure! Did you wipe off your gear with a damp cloth soon afterwards?
In my own work with ocean waves I get soaked quite often...usually while I'm under the dark cloth!
At any rate, I love the excitement of your "sneaker wave," plus how perfectly the spray pattern fills the upper left of the square perfectly, and how that gentle curve of the sand and rock on the lower right helps to "ground" the image somewhat. Interesting when I scroll the image down so that the sand and rock feature disappears - at which point its all about that spray and its a bit much...so I do like how that foreground feature works here.
Also...how well you work the square (another sad reminder that I sometimes really miss my 'Blads!). Finally, another reminder to me, given that I tend to gravitate to long(ish) exposures for my wave photos...to try speeding things up once in a while!
That spray shot is great. Worth getting wet. Well, for us anyway.![]()

Thanks John for your thoughts. I was playing around with cropping but as you've alluded it seems like the full square works. I've made a few prints from my square images so I think this one will be going in the docket for sure. I need to get some larger square mats too...I'd like to do this one 20x20 I think.
And yes I did wipe down the lens a bit later when I had some fresh water handy. Not too much though. Hopefully I won't need to get a service from this shot! Luckily I did have my handy R25 filter on as usual so avoided any salt water in the glass and crevices around there.
Speaking of cropping, I envisioned this image 4:5 and it worked as intended. However I shot a color image as well and I will be eager to see once I get there, on Portra 160 or Gold 200, can't remember.

There's nothing like a sneaker wave to teach you to bring along a bottle of distilled water and clean soft microfiber cloths when planning an ocean shoot. Salt water is also terrible for leather boots. But good timing!
