What are these streaks on my neg - never seen before.

Hi all - Just developed a few 4x5 negs, and found these weird streaks in the sky Click image for larger version.

Ilford FP4 in diafine 3min x 3min. Mild-moderate agitation in kodak film hangers.

    Any help will be appreciated.

Before I read your explanation, I looked at the picture, and thought "HANGER DEVELOPMENT".

I don't use hangers, and don't claim to be knowledgeable regarding their use. Others will jump in, I'm sure.

    Are you new to hangers?

Looks like Bryce or Cedar Breaks. Am I close?

Agitaton appears too vigorous. Lift and dip more gently.

You might try simple tray development using a 5x7” tray (for 4x5” film). Pre-soak 2 minutes in water then develop emulsion side up, rotating through the stack, once every minute.
I’ve used this technique since 1990 with excellent results. I stress the water pre-soak as this helps minimize all kinds of problems.
(I use Ilford FP4+ 4x5” and 8x10” developed in PMK Pyro)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm "old" to hangers, and don't have the space for tray development. Close to Bryce - Angeline peak, AZ.

These could be poor marks or even just drying marks.carefully examine the negatives, particularly the shiny side.

These marks IMO are from insufficient agitation in the first 20 seconds of development.

This would be my bet also. Especially with film hangers.

Could be, but OP says he used Diafine (2-bath, no development in bath A).

It could possibly be some sort of surge-type artifact depending on how the hanger was dipped into solution B where development is quite fast, but it is really hard to say.

The marks seem kind of too “fine”, as though caused by some kind of wiping action.

It might help to know if this is the first time OP has used hangers, or used Diafine in this way etc.

I've never experienced it, but it sure is reminiscent of the examples of bromide drag that I've seen -- whatever it is. Just one more reason I use tubes.
