    is this part of a projector lens?

    digging through some junk I found this barrel, thinking it might be part of a projector lens?

    Indeed it is!
    It is from a period when a variety of focal length objectives were available for projectors. This is a mount - into which these alternative optics would fit. No screw threads or bayonet fixtures, just pressure help by the longitudinal pairs of slits. The end of one of these pairs is showing in your image. Must be pre 1905 as Darlot was “gone” by then.
