Prairie Church

Hi everyone!

I put together a short video highlighting some of my favourite Canadian Prairie churches that I've been photographing for about 15 years. The majority are of Ukrainian Orthodox, in Saskatchewan, particularly Holy Ascension, up near Melfort. These churches are a testament to the strength and will of the Ukrainian people who hard toil helped to shape our country, as well as a tribute to all the peoples of the Ukraine in these dark times. I too mostly photo country churches, on the plains of the Dakotas. I use film and mostly wet plate (4x5 film, 5x7 and 8x10 wet plate.) Churches here are mostly Lutheran but there are other denominations such as Catholic etc. No Orthodox churches however.

Wikipedia says that Canada has the third largest Ukrainian population in the world, behind only Russia and Ukraine itself. For Americans unfamiliar with the geography that Andrew's talking about, Saskatchewan borders Montana and North Dakota. Melfort is almost directly north of the Montana/North Dakota border. Chrystia Freeland, Canada's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, is Ukrainian Canadian, and was at one time the Financial Times's bureau chief in Moscow. A sharp critic of Russia's annexation of Crimea, she was for a time barred from entering Russia.
