The two "balloon" (not!) photos...from the same negative as you imply? If so, this helps to illustrate just what can be available, in terms of a full-scale "pallet," from a well exposed and processed negative.

(and quite an effective test of product I might add! )

Thanks John ! Nope - two different negatives. The same set up, but different backgrounds - first with my black t-shirt and another one with light gray paper.
Window light from the left with reflector at right side. Meter time was 2sec + 1 stop for BF, so I calculated actual exposure as 22 seconds for reciprocity failure.
Both developed in Rodinal 1+50 at the same time in rotary tank.

This is lovely.
The dark background brings out the subject, in a way the pale background does not.
