    With portraiture, LF excels at 'directness', and Francis is showing some great examples of that!

    Or with LF, portraiture excels at directness ?

    Yes, directness is the right word. This is what I like with LF portraiture.

    Kodak 405 Portrait, I think f5.6 but could have been wide open, very expired and poor condition 8x10 Fomapan 200, on a Century Master Portrait camera. Lighting was a Bowens beauty dish to the left, and a background light in a background reflector behind the subject.

    Cooke 10.4" Series II f4.5 on Ilford FP4+, whole plate. Same Century Master studio camera as the previous shot. I THINK this was f/8 but could have been f5.6. Obviously NOT a true soft-focus lens, but it does do a beautiful job transitioning to out-of-focus.
