The adjustable soft focus feature was an option.
Oh, that's interesting. Thanks
If you really want the soft focus feature, you can remove the front engraved ring and put a spacer behind the front element to move it out farther, then reassemble. Moving the front element out is how the original ring worked, but doing it manually is a pain if you want to use it both sharp and soft, and switch often.

Thanks Mark. I read your post. I may look for a 12" with the ring
Will moving the front group of lenses make something similar? I got a 12" where I can not remove the stop screw due to damaged threads, so front lens movements are limited.
The difference I actually saw between the minimum and maximum setting was more focus movements more than diffused focus.

The soft focus adjustment separates the two front elements, causing an increase in spherical aberration.
Unscrewing the front group won't achieve that.
There are a lot of threads on this topic with a lot of great info here...I spent quite a bit of time reading them when I got my Velo. Highly recommended!
Rehashing an old thread, What is the difference between a Velostigmat II 12 inch 4.5 that does not have the soft focus ring and a Velostigmat 12 inch 4.5?
Like an idiot, now I have both, I thought the series II in the 12 inch was soft focus.
The price was okay but I think now I will have two of the same lenses that aren't exactly what I wanted.
Mark, you talk about separating the front element and putting in a spacer to make a permanent adjustment, does that work, how does one do that?
