Apo Sinaron se 150mm Vs Apo Symmar L 150mm

    Hi all
Is there any reason to prefer the Apo Sinaron SE 150mm vs the Schneider apo Symmar L?
    Thanks.

    I don't think so.

In fact, given the choice between the two, I would opt for the latter. Unrelated to this comparison, most of my taking lenses are Apo Symmars. With the "L" version, you get the added image circle. And, I think I would prefer the Symmar's contrast over that of the Sinaron. (A little less fot the Symmar.)

Either way, they are both fine lenses.

The Sinaron SE lens is a Rodenstock Apo Sironar S. The 150mm Apo Sironar S and 150mm Apo Symmar L were the most recent iterations from Rodenstock and Schneider respectively and I would consider them functionally equivalent, so Id just get whichever one is in better condition.

I once compared them on my Sinar 4x5 and I found the Sinaron a bit softer, so it also depends whether you do architecture or portrait

Awhile ago I found myself holding out for a good example of a 150mm Apo-Sironar W...as part of my "bucket list holy-trinity" of LF lenses (for 5x7), with the other two being the 110 XL and the 210 Apo Sironar-S (one life to live...gotta drink that coolaid!)...but ended up going with the 150 Apo-Symmar L as it was (in like new condition) half the price of the W, lighter and more compact, and with a smaller (#0) shutter. A bit of sacrifice in coverage...but so far, so good, excepting, of course, the PITA factor of step up rings (aargh!). I still think about that 150 Apo-W though!

I'm not so sure; we would benefit from Bob's input on this.

    Sinaron-S = Caltar II-N = Sironar-N / Apo-Sironar-N
    Sinaron-SE = Apo-Sironar-S
    Sinaron-WS = Apo-Sironar / Apo-Sironar-W

    "softer" at what aperture ?
Or was the perceived difference contrast rather than actual resolution and how was this determination made?

~Lower contrast can be easily interpreted as softer. Higher -vs- lower contrast rendition is better or worst, it is simply different and essentially equal. Choice should depend on image goals.

What I intended to say was that I have a 210mm Sinaron-SE and it is most definitely a rebadged Rodenstock Apo Sironar-S.

    My apologies Oren!

    Thanks for making this clear.
