    Same reason painter studios like north-facing windows. No direct sun. More natural "white" light, not too warm (orangey). Or maybe that's where his room is?

    Only? It may work BEST with consistent diffused northern light. As shown, the mercury vapor lamp would provide very uneven light.

    I've seen similar diagrams like this referencing a solar enlarger setup for Carbon Prints of all things. The conventional wisdom today is that it's impossible to enlarge alternate process prints, but they found a way back then apparently.

    There are now some UV enlarger projects underway showing success
