    CHAS A. GUMP brass Lens?

Has anyone here ever heard of a CHAS A. GUMP Rectilinear 5X8 Lens? Because apparently the entire internet never has….. Roberts Photo currently has one and google is coming up empty handed.

Re: CHAS A. GUMP brass Lens?

When I google it I see some pictures from a site called akademiamomentum. That seems to me to be a relatively standard Rectilinear (F8?) lens from about 1880 to 1910. What strikes me about this lens is that it has a 'modern' aperture that mechanically does not fit completely into the barrel and therefore protrudes slightly. Could this be one of the earlier adjustable models to replace waterhouse stops?
The fact that you can't find anything on the name will most likely be that this is a rebadge of another model by the seller or dealer.
With the information provided I can't say much more specifically about it, if you have a photo there might be people here who recognize it or can help you further. And maybe it's useful to know what kind of information you are looking for

We don’t refer to current eBay listings.

Roberts is a brick and mortar shop in Indianapolis. I mention them because that’s where I ran across the lens. I don’t think it’s allowed to post their links or photos of the lens here, so I’m not sure how else to fish for information about it within this forum.
The info about rebranding is helpful though, and makes sense!

This Gundlach 5x8 (from that wonderful site with all of the old lens catalogs) seems very similar- an 8-1/2” lens that maybe can be used front-cel rear-cel only as well?
(Also I think I’ll just order it from Gundlach’s catalog, it’s only $24!)

If you haven't already done so, talking with Roberts Photo would be a good place to start. Or do they not know anything about the lens that they're selling?

Sounds like a lens sold by a retailer who bought in lenses engraved with his firm's name.

Looks like it- This text accompanied someone's Flickr-posted image of an engraving:

"Chas. a. Gump & Co., 31 and 33 East Second Street, Dayton, Ohio. Lawn Tennis Racquets, Balls, Nets, Poles, BaseBalls, Bats, Gloves, Body Protectors, StrikingBags, Chest Weights, Indian Clubs, DumbBells, Bows and Arrows, Kodaks, Cameras,Lenses, Dry Plates, Chemicals and every-thing for making and finishing Photographs"

as well as this small ad found elsewhere: Sounds like it was quite a store!
