strange defects (4-5 spots in a line) in the center of 4x5

    Hi all,

just started LF today. Ilford HP5+ 400,
    developing:
    1. distilled water
    2. D76 (stock) at 20°C
    3. Ilfostop (1:19) 30 sec
    4. Ilfofixer (1:4) 5 min
    5. tap water to wash off
    6. Photoflo (5ml on 1000 ml

Problem: all of my developed films have a strange defect: 4-5 dots, on a straight line in the center of the frame (along the short, 4" side). Especially well visible on a film that I (unintentionally) failed to expose but developed in a usual way.

Can you retry posting the picture of the reel you had used?

i'm aware of 3 4x5 reels that fit patterson tanks. Mod54, 20th Century, and the B's reel. I use the 20th Century and could see how the center spiral that holds the film and keeps it from coming out, could create scraches like that during loading or unloading if you're not careful. I've never had it happen. The Mod54 or the B's wouldn't make those marks that I can see.

Ok, I had the exact same issues with spots/defects in my film when developing in QL57 reel. Jeff from 20th Century told me the spots are created by small bumps designed into the inside surface of the arm to allow for the developer to circulate behind the film. Those are essentially anti-halation layer of the film that didn't get cleared from the film because the arm was touching the film at those spots. When I re-soaked my film in fixer for 5 mins those spots went away.

Seems that QL57 is a bad design. Will order the B's

    Thank you all!

Hi the dots are where the center arm makes contact with the back of the film (the only place) and the are remnants of the anti-halation under those points of contact. for the negatives you have already developed put them in a tray of fixer and those spots will disappear. to prevent them going forward agitate more aggressively during fixing.
