I've never done this, but I like the idea of binary--8 notches gives you 256 unique values without needing to differentiate notch shapes, and it good for 128 film holders--far more than I'll ever own. Plus if you can count to FF your notes only need two digits. (as a programmer, hex is second nature to me.)
I've seen many notches before when I did processed for a living. I kinda thought it was just id'ing the holder/photographer. I didn't realize it was for other info. Learn something new! I've seen it on LF sheet film and I've seen it on 120 backs like extra notches on Hassy and other 120's that have removable backs.

I was initially pleased with a different system designed by Tim Klein at Stearman Press, for which he provided a template for making stick-on numbers on tabs cut from a sheet of processed film. However, although I usually give myself a bit of adjustment room when composing, I ran into a situation a couple of weeks ago in which I could not back up into a road to give myself a bit more framing room. When processed, the little tab with the number stuck just a bit too far into the frame. So, I have a set of 3 miniature files on order and will use a system like Doremus's and others'.
BJ Harlin shows notches cut only in the inner part of the slide insertion tab. https://www.jbhphoto.com/articles/fi...der-numbering/

When I was googling, I somehow missed this article!
Not sure how I feel about spreading the notches all along the edge though… might be good in case your scene eats some part of the notching in exposure so you’ll still have information to work with… still thinking that roman numerals/notation is the best option for me…

I think I have holders notched on both sides. You could easily notch the side opposite the film's code notches if there's a problem. I think I've had a couple of instances where my notch images got swallowed up by a code notch, but it hasn't really caused a problem.
I imagine that if I had it all to do over, I'd notch the other side
Best,
Doremus
